Terms and Conditions

Terms and Conditions

Last updated: 26 April 2026

These are the terms and conditions on which we provide painting and decorating services. Please read them carefully — they explain what you can expect from us, what we expect from you, and what happens if something goes wrong. We’ve kept the language plain on purpose.

By accepting a quote from Andy Painting Service, either in writing, by email, or by allowing work to begin, you agree to these terms.

1. Who We Are

In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to:

Andy Painting Service
81 Rochdale Road
Sunderland, SR5 5NL
Phone: 0790 8242 036
Email: info@andypaintingservice.co.uk

“You” means the customer named on the quote — the person or business engaging us to carry out work.

2. The Quote

We provide quotes free of charge, with no obligation. Quotes are normally given in writing after we’ve visited the property and looked at the job.

Each quote is valid for 30 days from the date it’s issued, unless we tell you otherwise in writing. After 30 days, we may need to revise the quote because of changes in material costs or our availability.

A quote is a fixed-price offer for the specific work described in it. It does not include any work that isn’t listed on the quote.

3. Accepting a Quote

You can accept a quote by:

  • Replying in writing or by email confirming acceptance
  • Paying any agreed deposit
  • Allowing us to start work on the agreed date

Once a quote is accepted, a contract exists between us based on the quote and these terms.

4. Pricing

The price on the quote is what you’ll pay, provided the work doesn’t change from what’s described. Our prices include:

  • Labour for the work described
  • Standard preparation (sanding, filling, priming where stated)
  • Paint and basic materials, unless we’ve stated otherwise on the quote
  • Dust sheets, masking and basic protection of your property
  • Standard tidy-up at the end of each working day and at the end of the job

Our prices do not normally include:

  • Major repairs, replastering, or rebuilding work unless specifically listed
  • Specialist materials or paints not stated on the quote (e.g. designer brand paints, specialist coatings)
  • Furniture removal beyond moving small items within the room
  • Disposal of large items (old wallpaper from the customer, removed fittings, etc.) unless stated
  • Scaffolding hire, unless included on the quote
  • Any local authority parking charges, congestion charges or permit costs

If you’re a VAT-registered business and need an invoice for VAT purposes, please tell us before we provide the quote so we can issue it correctly.

5. Payment Terms

For most jobs we ask for the following payment structure:

  • Small jobs (under £500): Full payment on completion.
  • Medium jobs (£500 to £2,000): 25% deposit on the day work starts, balance due on completion.
  • Larger jobs (over £2,000): 25% deposit on the day work starts, an interim payment may be agreed, balance due on completion.

Payment can be made by bank transfer, cash, or card (where available). Bank details are provided on the invoice.

Payment is due within 7 days of the invoice date, unless agreed otherwise in writing. If payment isn’t received by the due date, we reserve the right to:

  • Charge interest at 4% above the Bank of England base rate, in line with the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 for business customers
  • Pause any further work until outstanding payments are settled
  • Recover any reasonable costs incurred in collecting late payment

Deposits are non-refundable once we’ve ordered materials specifically for your job, except where you exercise your statutory right to cancel within the cooling-off period (see Section 6).

6. Your Right to Cancel

If we agreed to the work somewhere other than our business premises (for example, in your home or by phone or email after a home visit), you have the right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 to cancel the contract within 14 days of accepting the quote, without giving any reason.

To cancel within this period, please tell us in writing — by email or letter to the addresses above. A simple statement that you wish to cancel is enough. If you cancel within 14 days and no work has started, we’ll refund any deposit in full within 14 days of receiving your cancellation.

If you’ve asked us to start work within the 14-day cooling-off period (which we’ll always confirm with you in writing), and you then cancel before completion, you may be required to pay for the work already done in proportion to the total job.

After the 14-day cooling-off period has ended, cancellation may incur charges to cover materials already purchased and any labour already provided.

None of this affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

7. Changes and Additional Work

If you’d like additional work that wasn’t on the original quote — for example, painting an extra room, adding wallpaper to a feature wall, or upgrading to a different paint — just ask. We’ll give you a separate price for the additional work in writing before we start it. The original quote remains unchanged.

If we discover work needed during the job that wasn’t visible at the quote stage (for example, hidden damp, rotten timber, or wallpaper that won’t come off cleanly), we’ll stop, explain what we’ve found, and give you a written estimate for the extra work. You can choose whether to proceed.

We won’t carry out additional chargeable work without your agreement.

8. Access and Site Requirements

To carry out the work, we need:

  • Reasonable access to the property at the agreed times
  • Access to running water and electricity at no charge to us
  • Somewhere safe to leave tools and materials overnight if the job runs over multiple days (we can take them with us if preferred — please let us know)
  • Reasonable parking near the property; if parking permits are required, you’ll need to arrange these

If we can’t access the property at an agreed time through no fault of our own, or if essential services aren’t available, we may charge for the time lost.

9. Your Responsibilities Before We Start

To help the job run smoothly, please:

  • Move smaller items (lamps, ornaments, small electronics, valuables) out of the work areas
  • Remove curtains, blinds, pictures and wall fixtures unless we’ve agreed to do this
  • Tell us about any special items, fragile finishes, or anything you don’t want disturbed
  • Tell us in advance if there are any health considerations we should know about (children, pets, asthma, allergies to paint or solvents)
  • Make sure pets are kept out of the work areas for safety

We’ll always cover what we can with dust sheets and masking, but we can’t be responsible for damage to items left in the work area that should reasonably have been moved or protected.

10. Materials

Unless we’ve agreed otherwise on the quote, we supply all paint and standard materials needed for the job. We use trade-quality paints from established manufacturers and we’re happy to discuss specific brands or finishes with you.

If you’re supplying your own materials, please make sure they’re available before the start date and that they’re suitable for the surfaces we’re treating. We can advise on suitability but we can’t guarantee the finish if you’ve supplied materials we wouldn’t have chosen ourselves.

Any unused paint or materials remain the property of Andy Painting Service unless they were supplied by you, or unless you specifically request that we leave them with you (for touch-ups).

11. Working Hours

Our standard working hours are 8:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday, and 9:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays. If you’d prefer different hours (for example, no early starts in a flat with thin walls), please tell us at the quote stage and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

We don’t normally work on Sundays or bank holidays unless specifically agreed.

12. Weather and Other Delays

Exterior work — painting walls, fences, exterior woodwork or render — is weather-dependent. We won’t paint surfaces that are wet, frozen, in direct strong sunlight where it would damage the finish, or where rain is forecast within the drying window for the products we’re using.

If weather causes delays, we’ll let you know as soon as we can and reschedule for the next suitable day. We don’t charge extra for weather delays, but we also can’t guarantee a fixed completion date for exterior work.

Other circumstances beyond our reasonable control — illness, vehicle breakdown, supplier problems — may also cause short delays. We’ll always communicate as early as possible if a delay arises.

13. Health and Safety

We carry out our work in line with current health and safety regulations. Some of the products we use give off vapours during application and drying — we’ll always recommend ventilation and let you know if you should keep certain rooms unoccupied for a period after we finish.

We don’t work on properties known or suspected to contain asbestos, lead-based paint (in older properties), or other hazardous materials without proper specialist assessment first. If you suspect any of these may be present, please tell us at the quote stage.

14. Our Guarantee

Most of our work comes with a six-month guarantee from the date of completion. If a defect appears during this period that is genuinely caused by faulty workmanship on our part, we’ll come back and put it right at no charge.

The guarantee does not cover:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Damage caused by accidents, misuse, or third parties
  • Issues caused by underlying problems with the property (damp, structural movement, condensation, leaks)
  • Surfaces or materials supplied by you, where the issue relates to that material’s quality
  • Colour fading caused by direct sunlight (this affects all paints to some degree)
  • Work that has been altered, repainted, or interfered with by anyone else after we finished

Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — that work must be carried out with reasonable skill and care — apply in addition to this guarantee and are not affected by it.

15. Insurance and Liability

We hold public liability insurance covering accidental damage to property and injury to third parties arising from our work. A copy of the certificate is available on request.

Subject to the rest of this section, we accept liability for direct damage caused by our negligence in carrying out the work. Our maximum liability for any one claim is limited to the price paid for the job, except where the law requires unlimited liability (for example, death or personal injury caused by negligence).

We are not liable for:

  • Indirect or consequential losses (loss of enjoyment, loss of business, loss of opportunity)
  • Damage to items that should reasonably have been moved or protected by you before the work started
  • Pre-existing defects in the property that become visible during the work
  • Issues arising from materials you supplied yourself

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability where it would be unlawful to do so.

16. Photographs of Completed Work

We sometimes take photographs of completed work for our portfolio, website, or social media. We won’t include any identifying information about you or the property, and we won’t take photos that show the inside of an occupied home without your specific permission.

If you’d prefer we didn’t take any photos of the job at all, just tell us — we’ll respect that without issue.

17. Complaints

If you’re not happy with any aspect of our work or service, please tell us as soon as possible — by phone, email or in person. Most issues can be sorted quickly when we know about them.

We’ll respond to any written complaint within 7 working days and aim to resolve it within 30 days. If we can’t resolve it between us, you may be able to use an alternative dispute resolution scheme — we’ll provide details if needed.

18. Privacy

How we handle your personal information is set out in our Privacy Policy.

19. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute arising under them is subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

20. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The version that applies to your job is the one in force at the date your quote is issued. The current version is always available on our website at andypaintingservice.co.uk/terms-and-conditions.
